A man who attempted to get his girlfriend a unique gift as an early Christmas present has had the whole thing spectacularly blow up in his face.
The unnamed guy has shared the disastrous tale in a post on Reddit’s Relationship Advice forum, hoping strangers will have some words of wisdom to help.
He claims he purchased a DNA testing kit for his partner and that her mum and dad approved him getting the present.
However, after giving her 23 and Me ancestry kit a go, the American woman has now uncovered a shocking family secret that her mum has been keeping for the last 30 years.
In his Reddit post, the man says “think I f***ed up by getting my girlfriend a DNA test for Christmas”.
How to do a DNA test and get your sample
He explains that she had the gift early and got the results recently. They were looking through them and everything seemed normal until she noticed it said “half-sister” under the list of her family members.
As far as she was aware, she didn’t have a half-sister, so she decided to look into it.
The post reads: “She looks up the half-sister and she does not recognise her but recognises a few people in her circle. She looks up her father and gets his name. Confused she calls up her mom and puts her on speaker in our room.
“‘Mom do I have a half-sister?’ Her mom replied ‘Of course not, why would you have a half-sister honey lol’. Before her mum stopped chuckling she replied ‘Do you know a John Smith?’
“The phone became dead silent.”
Her mum then is said to have asked what he has to do with anything, the woman explains that her DNA test results say she has a half-sister and that John is the girl’s father.
The mum says nothing for a while before asking: “Have you said anything to your father?”
She confirms she hasn’t told him and her mum eventually decides to confess a secret she’s kept for the woman’s entire life.
“She then proceeded to explain what happened. So apparently her mom and dad had ‘taken a break’ for a weekend and she hooked up with her ex-boyfriend (John). Then got back with my girlfriend’s dad a couple of days later.”
The boyfriend added: “When she found out she was pregnant and they dated a possible time frame for conception. She knew it was probably not her husband’s. She’s kept this secret for 30 years. She told my girlfriend to keep this secret. My girlfriend doesn’t know what to do now and I’m just sitting here shaking my head at the audacity of her mom.”
Reddit users were quick to reassure the boyfriend that this wasn’t his fault.
One person commented: “For the record, the f**k up was entirely her mother’s for lying to her. You did nothing wrong and I hope you’re able to support her through this.”
Another replied: ” Biology doesn’t make a dad, but removing the consent of the dad in this situation from making the choice of raising another sperm donor’s child is cruel.”
A third said: “The truth will set you free. But first it will p**s you off. I kinda hope your GF tells her dad. I don’t know if that makes me an idiot or what but I value truth above all else.”
